SlingCatcher hits Canadian retail shelves

The SlingCatcher™ – a digital media streaming device from the makers of Slingbox – is available for Canadian purchase from Future Shop, Best Buy, Canada Computers and London Drugs

Foster City, CA – Sling Media, Inc., a leading digital lifestyle products company, is pleased to announce the award-winning SlingCatcher™ is now available for purchase from leading retailers in Canada. The SlingCatcher is a universal media player that seamlessly delivers broadcast TV, Internet video and personal content from personal PCs to television sets. The SlingCatcher allows customers to watch online video from any popular site on the internet including network television sites like ABC.com, video content sites like Hulu.com, community video sites like YouTube.com, and even online movie rentals from popular services like Netflix, directly from a PC to the TV for the ultimate lean-back, social viewing experience.

“Customers have been waiting with anticipation for this product since we announced it, and I’m very pleased to say to them that the SlingCatcher has arrived,” said Blake Krikorian, co-founder and CEO of Sling Media, Inc. “Thousands of video programs are available for viewing online for free, but until now there hasn’t been an easy way to watch them on a screen larger than your laptop computer. In addition, SlingCatcher will give Slingbox customers the ability to watch their home TV on another TV, something they have been asking for since we first introduced the original Slingbox in 2005.”

The SlingCatcher, with its included remote control, also allows customers to access and control any device connected to a Slingbox – for instance a DVR, Cable or Satellite set-top box – located in another room in the house or even from a Slingbox in a remote location. And finally, connect a standard USB hard drive or USB flash drive and the SlingCatcher can playback on the TV most personal media stored on the hard disk, including home movies, personal videos, internet video downloads, etc.

SlingCatcher comes with three built-in applications: SlingPlayer™ for TV, SlingProjector™ and My Media that combine to create a unified media platform capable of delivering content from disparate places for viewing on a single TV screen. This unique approach promises to give customers unprecedented control over their home television experience.

SlingPlayer for TV delivers one of the most requested features from existing Slingbox customers: the ability to watch and control their living room TV on another TV in the home or on a TV in a remote location without using a PC or custom cabling.

Customers today have on-demand access to a variety of video programming over the Internet that dwarfs the linear programming that comes into their homes from cable and satellite. This includes literally thousands of video sites streaming movies, TV shows, cultural and niche programming, sporting events, and much more, right to their PC. The SlingProjector software allows consumers to project any of this programming directly onto their TV via the SlingCatcher.

Using SlingProjector, customers can catch up on back episodes of their favorite TV programs without having to wait for them to air again, or they can sample new TV programs online before scheduling them on their DVR. SlingProjector supports virtually any video streaming web site, media player and Internet video player and is designed to give the user control over how the video is projected to the TV. The SlingProjector software lets a user select a specific video playing within a web site or media player, projecting just the video and not the entire PC screen making for a much more enjoyable viewing experience.

My Media gives customers the ability to playback on their TV a broad range of media files from a wide variety of sources, including camcorders, digital cameras, personal DVD recordings, and Internet video downloads. With My Media, customers can play their favorite videos from their own personal media libraries using an external USB hard drive or flash drive that they connect to one of the SlingCatcher’s two USB ports. Today the SlingCatcher supports a variety of native media formats including WMV, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.264 and Xvid as well as a number of file formats including .avi, .vob, .ifo, .mpg, .mov, .wma. Because there is a huge variety of media file formats on the market today, Sling Media created and is in testing on a conversion utility called SlingSync that will convert incompatible files into a format that can be played back on the TV via SlingCatcher. SlingSync will also pre-scan a media library to determine which files are compatible at the outset saving the customer the uncertainty of whether their media will playback properly.

SlingCatcher includes both standard definition and high definition outputs to connect to a TV including HDMI, component video, S-Video and composite video, as well as both analog and digital audio connectors. SlingCatcher also features a standard Ethernet jack to connect to the home network, either directly or via SlingLink powerline Ethernet adapters.

Sling Media is represented in Canada for sales, marketing and technical support by Keating Technologies. SlingCatcher is available from leading Canadian retailers including Best Buy, Future Shop, Canada Computers and London Drugs for $329.99 CDN.

Sling Media demonstrates SlingCatcher publicly for first time at CES 2008

Toronto, ON – Sling Media, Inc., a leading digital lifestyle products company, today announced it will be demonstrating its highly anticipated SlingCatcher™ product at the Sling Media booth, #73106, Sands Convention Center, for the first time publicly at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show here in Las Vegas, January 7th-10th. The SlingCatcher is a set-top box that seamlessly delivers broadcast TV, Internet-based content and personal media to the TV. The SlingCatcher acts as a repository for content and is able to pull from multiple sources and places, unifying the content for easy navigation and playback. SlingCatcher is slated for Q2 retail availability at a price of $299.99CAD.

“We’re thrilled to be showing the SlingCatcher with its full set of features here at CES and it’s great to see the enthusiasm in the market for this product. We have been spending a lot of time perfecting new technology that is vital to the SlingCatcher’s user experience but sometimes these things take longer than expected,” said Blake Krikorian, co-founder, chairman and CEO of Sling Media. “We had hoped to deliver the product for the Christmas holiday, but to plagiarize a well known wine maker; we shall sell no SlingCatcher before its time”.

SlingCatcher is bundled with three built-in applications: SlingPlayer™ for TV, SlingSync and SlingProjector™ that combine to create a unified media platform capable of pulling content from disparate places and consolidating them onto a single TV screen, giving the customer complete control of their personal media.

SlingPlayer for TV delivers one of the most requested Slingbox customer features: the ability to “sling” programming to another TV in the home or to a TV in a remote location without a PC by connecting to and streaming from the Slingbox on a LAN or WAN. In addition, when combined with the forthcoming Slingbox PRO-HD, SlingCatcher will give customers the ability to stream in HD from one TV to another.

SlingProjector enables consumers to project to the TV Internet and PC-based digital audio/video content – whether downloaded movies, TV shows, home movies, photo slideshows or YouTube videos – from a PC to TV-screen for a “lean back” viewing experience. SlingProjector supports most video streaming web sites, media players and Internet video players.

Finally, SlingSync gives customers the ability to sync files over their network connection and store them on a third-party USB flash drive or other portable hard drive attached to the SlingCatcher, giving them the ability to use the SlingCatcher to replay their favorite content on demand and manage content from a PC via the SlingCatcher user interface.

The SlingCatcher includes both standard definition and high definition AV outputs to connect to a TV including HDMI, component, S-Video and composite video, as well as analog and digital audio. In regards to network connectivity, the SlingCatcher features a standard Ethernet jack to connect to the home network either directly or via SlingLink powerline Ethernet adapters. In addition, Sling Media will sell a wireless USB adapter called SlingLink Wireless for $59.99CAD, which can also be used to create the network connection. SlingCatcher will be available in Q2 for a retail price of $299.99CAD.

Sling Media develops industry’s first cable modem to integrate place-shifting capabilities

Company will market new SlingModem as an OEM device to MSOs worldwide

Toronto, ON – Sling Media Inc., a digital lifestyle products company, today announced the development and CableLabs certification of the first cable modem that fully integrates the place-shifting capabilities pioneered in the original Slingbox™. With the SlingModem™, customers can easily watch and control their TV programming on any Internet-connected computing device just as they would in front of the living room television.

“Both Sling Media customers and the industry have asked whether the acquisition by EchoStar would limit Sling Media’s focus to products for DISH Network and other satellite TV service operators. The introduction of the SlingModem demonstrates our operator-agnostic philosophy, as well as our commitment to the cable industry,” said Blake Krikorian, co-founder and CEO of Sling Media. “We are working with MSOs both in the U.S. and worldwide, and we expect to deliver the SlingModem through OEM customers in 2008.”

The SlingModem provides the cable customer with both a broadband connection as well as the placeshifting functionality made famous by the Slingbox. Connecting a SlingModem is as simple as a traditional modem, with the only required input being the coaxial cable from the wall. Upon set up, users will instantly have access to their analog cable channels on a PC, Mac, or compatible smartphone. In addition, customers with a digital cable set-top box can connect SlingModem to the set-top box to access live or recorded television programming, premium content and video on demand. Because the SlingModem requires no router configuration, installation is simple and low cost while also providing tremendous added value to the customer.

Sling Media to showcase SlingPlayer 2.0 featuring Clip+Sling and Sling.com at CES 2008

Free upgrade to the SlingPlayer desktop software for the PC will allow Slingbox owners to clip and share content streamed from their Slingbox

Toronto, ON – Sling Media, Inc., a leading digital lifestyle products company, today announced it will be demonstrating Clip+Sling at CES as part of the company’s new SlingPlayer™ 2.0 client software. Clip+Sling gives Slingbox customers the ability to “grab” snippets of their favorite television content and instantly share them with friends. As part of the demonstration at CES, Sling Media is also giving a sneak peak of the forthcoming video destination site, Sling.com. Clips made by Slingbox customers will be uploaded to Sling.com, creating personal playlists and feeds that can be viewed and subscribed to by other Slingbox customers as well as the community at large. In addition to featuring short-form content, Sling.com will be a vehicle for consumers to discover and enjoy long-form programming.

Clip+Sling is made possible by Sling Media’s new SlingPlayer 2.0, the client software for the PC that gives Slingbox customers the ability to ‘placeshift’ their television content to a desktop or laptop computer located just about anywhere. SlingPlayer 2.0 is packed with new features: in addition to the revolutionary Clip+Sling, SlingPlayer 2.0 will include a program guide of channel listings and a local video buffer that gives customers DVR-like controls.

“Clip+Sling will be another exciting feature for Slingbox owners to use and enjoy, but it will also be appreciated by millions of other people who may discover a new show or favorite movie, thanks to the recommendations of their friends,” said Blake Krikorian, co-founder, chairman and CEO of Sling Media. “Because of this fundamental shift in the way consumers create, share and interact with content, Clip+Sling will change the way people socialize around television.”

Clip+Sling
Imagine wanting to share a great play from this weekend’s game with someone who didn’t see it. With Clip+Sling, Slingbox customers now have an intuitive application that allows them to create clips in mere seconds and instantly share them with friends and family. Clips are uploaded to Sling Media’s video destination, Sling.com, where they can be viewed by anyone who has a Web browser. Clips viewed on Sling.com may also lead the consumer to a wealth of related short- and long-form content to enjoy.

Programming Guide
Similar to the program guide available on cable or satellite set-top boxes, SlingPlayer 2.0’s program guide allows Slingbox owners to see exactly what shows are available on their home TV, no matter where they happen to be. Because SlingPlayer 2.0 uses a broadband Internet connection to stream video to the PC, Sling Media is able to use that same connectivity to give customers an easy-to-navigate view of their programming guide and supplemental content.

Video Buffer
Just like a DVR, the new SlingPlayer 2.0 video buffer allows users to pause live TV, fast forward or rewind instantaneously. The video buffer, temporarily stored on the PC or Mac, gives customers complete viewing flexibility even if they don’t have a DVR at home. “Clip+Sling is a major milestone and advance in the interactive revolution of television,” said Jason Hirschhorn, president of the Sling Media Entertainment Group. “This is a great moment for consumers and an even bigger moment for content providers to explore new business and promotional opportunities for their programming.”

Sling Media will be demonstrating SlingPlayer 2.0 in the Sling Media booth, #73106, Sands Convention Center, at this week’s International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, January 7th-10th. SlingPlayer 2.0 is in an internal beta, and the company is gearing up for a public preview release in the coming months.

In addition to the Sling Media booth, Sling Media products can be found in several other partner booths at the Consumer Electronics Show, including EchoStar Communications, Central Hall Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC), booth #9021 and Microsoft, Central Hall LVCC, booth #7144.
